Difference between atom and molecule

Difference between atom and molecule ::There is a fundamental concept in Physics regarding the atom, Nucleus, molecule, etc. In our surrounding, we daily face plenty of objects which are created out of matter.

This matter contains molecules. These are a formation of two or more atoms bonded together. There is a lot of difference between the atom and the molecule. It is essential to understand what an atom is and what the molecule is.

Every student should have an idea regarding this. They must know what an atom and a molecule are. Being combined, the atoms form a molecule. It helps to embody the objects around us.

If we analyze this, we get to see that the atom made up the whole universe. The particles are very small. These particles are present in every element.

It is very important to know that it is the difference between atoms and molecules. It is the fundamental question that arises in the mind of every student.

Chemistry students get new questions daily regarding this. They often face difficulty understanding these things accurately. Though both of these two are very small, the molecule is larger than an atom.

What is an Atom?

The small particle that can or cannot exist independently, we call this particle an atom. We can define an atom also as the smallest particle of an element. This showcases independent existence.

If more than one identical atom exists as a unit, we call it a molecule of an element. If two or more different elements can combine in a specific ratio, it helps to create a unit that exists freely. We call it a compound.

You can not see an atom through naked eyes or a magnifying microscope. The atoms have a nuclear bond. And they are very reactive.

Types:

Atoms mainly contain three types of tiny particles.

● The first one is the Protons. These particles have a positive charge.

● The second one is neutrons. These particles contain no charge. We can find it in the Nucleus of an atom.

● The third one is the Electrons, which mean negatively charged particles. They are found outside the Nucleus. There are about 118 elements or substances made of a single type of atom. If we see the periodic table, there are hydrogen, carbon, lead, gold, lithium, oxygen, and more elements.

We see that in Nucleus, there are three types of particles. Some particles have a positive charge. Some have a negative charge whereas some particles have no charge.

Here, these elements have the same number of negatively charged electrons compared to the number of positively charged particles—the electrons orbit around the outside of the Nucleus.

But sometimes atoms lose electrons or sometimes gain electrons. When they lose electrons, they will get a positive charge. And they will get a negative charge after gaining electrons.

Then we call them positive ions and negative ions. But the number of neutrons will vary, and it is very necessary to keep an atom stable.

Example: the examples of the atoms are hydrogen, helium, neon, etc.

What is a Molecule?

We know a molecule as a combination of atoms bonding with each other. We can define it as a combination of two or more atoms. The chemical bonds join the molecules strongly.

A molecule is the tiniest part of any substance that may reflect every property of the component. Here, a molecule contains two or three different types or maybe identical atoms.

It is also invisible through naked eyes but visible through a magnifying microscope. It is available in a free state. Atoms can combine the particles into groups and form a molecule.

Sometimes the molecule contains atoms of different types bonded together. We can say it a compound. It has a linear, angular, and triangular shape.

For example, when two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom bonded together, it creates the compound water.

Example: O2, HCl

Conclusion

In this article, we clearly say the difference between the atom and the molecule. There are some dissimilarities between the two topics. The atoms and molecules are tiny units. The atoms make the molecules. Though the size of a molecule is much higher than an atom.
